canastaThis group traces its origins back to 1991, when the Senior Center opened on Pepsi Place. Our game consists of four decks of cards, similar to “Samba.” We are a friendly and sociable group and all look forward to this weekly good time; some even go out to dinner together after the game. New members are always welcome—and we’re happy to teach anyone who wants to learn.

kingfishers A co-ed group of anglers, from novice to expert, that meets monthly to share information and ideas, learn from guest speakers, and make plans for fun and skill development opportunities. Members of the group lead a variety of fishing trips, near and far, in search of a variety of fish. We keep a stocked pond in the county and host an annual June picnic at Walnut Creek.

At Center, we play both the simple and the advanced versions of the U.S. adaptation of the 19th century Chinese game Ma Chiang.  Mah-Jongg, patented in 1920 by Joseph P. Babcock, uses rules of Western card games and incorporates features of the Chinese game.  If you know how to play, or would like to learn this challenging game that requires a fair amount of luck, join us! Observers welcome. Sundays 1:00-4:00 pm (American),  Mondays, 1:30–4:30 p.m, (Western),Wednesdays, 12:30–4:00 p.m.  Fridays, 9:00 a.m.–noon (American).  All levels of players are welcome at any session.

Senior Golf Group

Group meets at Meadow Creek Golf Course in Pen Park. Walk, ride, play the back nine or go for a full eighteen!  Come enjoy meeting new players or old friends while taking in the fresh air and beautiful scenery.  We try to match players of similar ability and no one takes the game too seriously.  To speed up play and for the benefit of all players, please review the rules of Ready Golf before participating.  See the Senior Center TIMES or the website for monthly starter contact information and other details.  A bi-annual meeting will be held at 12:30pm on a Monday in May and October.

Season fee applies, plus greens fees.  Optional:  pay $25/season for handicapping Keep Swinging at Meadowcreek Golf Course.  Assigned foursomes will start play between 7:30AM and 9:30AM.  Cost of play determined by the Pro Shop.  If you are interested in coming out to play, call Mike Garstang at 296-4003 or Tommy Clark at 973-3667.

If you’ve always wanted to learn to tap, now’s the time.  For information about lessons for beginners, call Bonnie Williams at 973-3408.  If you like to tap and have previous experience, this is also the group for you.  These classes are also for students interested in learning original choreography to a variety of musical styles.  Instructor Bonnie Williams, a professional dancer has trained in both the United States and Europe.  She has been performing, teaching and choreographing jazz, tap and ballet for over forty years. Open to all.

July 26 - Back to the Future
In this 1980’s sci-fi classic, small-town California teen Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) is thrown back into the 1950’s when an experiment by his eccentric scientist friend Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) goes awry. (Fantasy/Science fiction - 2 hours, 10 minutes)

August 2 - The Beaver
Walter Black (Mel Gibson) is depressed and sleeps most of the day. His wife Meredith (Jodie Foster) kicks him out. Walter starts carrying a beaver puppet and uses it to talk to himself and bolster his spirits. Through the beaver, the family begins to learn about Walter’s history and problems and ways to cope with difficult situations. (Drama/Comedy - 1 hour, 30 minutes)

August 9 - Ben Hur
Charlton Heston plays a Palestinian Jew who is battling the Roman empire at the time of Christ. His actions send him and his family into slavery, but an inspirational encounter with Jesus changes everything. (Drama/Action - 3 hours, 44 minutes)

August 16 - Hairspray
Pleasantly plump teenager Tracy Turnblad teaches 1962 Baltimore a thing or two about integration after landing a spot on a local TV dance show. (Musical - 2 hours)

August 23 - Happy Feet
Mumble (Elijah Wood), a young emperor penguin needs to be able to sing to attract a mate, but he has a terrible voice. Instead, Mumble must express himself and lure a female through his amazing talent for tap-dancing. (Animation/Comedy -1 hour, 50 minutes)

August 30 - The Benchwarmers
A baseball-loving millionaire (Jon Lovitz) helps three inept nerds (David Spade, Rob Schneider, Jon Heder) form a baseball team to compete with the meanest bullies in the Little League.
