Theme: Laughter in the Dark

Texts & Dates
September 14: Orientation, text TBA
October 12: Herzog, by Saul Bellow (Penguin Classics)
November 16: Zeno’s Conscience by Italo Svevo (Weaver translation)
December 14: Oblomov by Ivan Goncharov (Penguin Classics)

Texts

Apart from handouts distributed gratis by the moderator, new copies of assigned books can be obtained off the shelf or by special order from any local retailer, as well as from amazon.com, borders.com and barnesandnoble.com. Deeply discounted new (and variously priced “pre-owned”) copies are available from vendors associated with the on-line bookstores (click the “new and used” or “used” link on the title's descriptive page). Other reliable dealers in the secondary market include Bookfinder.com, Alibris.com, and Abebooks.com. Allow up to 2 weeks for delivery.

Method

Preparation: Each participant identifies specific interpretive problems in the assigned work and then frames a trial question and two contrasting answers. These are presented in session to launch a searching discussion by the entire group. The moderator coordinates the dialogue, poses Socratic questions, and provides relevant information, but does not lecture.

Moderator

D. L. Rubin is a Guggenheim Fellow (1980–81) and the author of several books on the baroque and classical lyric. Professor Emeritus of French Language and Literature at the University of Virginia, he is still active on Grounds, teaching critical argumentation in various programs. He also chairs the poetry board at The Virginia Quarterly Review, consults at the Center for Undergraduate Excellence, and publishes books for the research library market at Rookwood Press. From 2001 to 2008, he led Great Books discussions at JILL (now OLLI). Dr. Rubin may be reached at 971-1835 or via email at dlr93039@yahoo.com.

Trivia Fun
First Thursday of the Month
Thursday, August 5, 11:00 a.m.–Noon

Trivia Fun is a chance to mine treasure troves of information from the past and present, both for fun and to exercise the brain. This team-centered question-and-answer format will help preserve your recall capabilities. For instance, do you remember the red-headed comedienne, the Montana speed limit, and the tournament of Roses Parade? What about Beetle Bailey, Kate Smith, or Al Jolson? You won’t be alone while summoning your powers of recall—we shall team up by twos for more interaction and fun. Come one, come all! All levels of skill are welcome! We want to make this a monthly occasion that’s not only stimulating and fun, but also a staple in the senior community. For more information, call Levi Miller 434-974-9339 or Pat Cook 434-973-0799.

September 16, 2010

5:30–6:30 p.m. with Q&A: 6:30–7:30 p.m.

Paying taxes on Roth IRAs is like paying taxes on an acorn, while paying taxes on traditional IRAs means the acorn is bigger, but you pay taxes on the oak. Huh? Right now tax rates are relatively low, but rates will rise, beginning in 2011. Taking the money currently in a traditional IRA, paying taxes as though that money is ordinary income, and then and converting it to Roth accounts will save you from paying up to 17.8% more in taxes in the future. Speaker David Marotta will address how Roth IRAs work, when you should convert to Roth accounts, and how the process can help you save money.

The group maintains its own stocked pond in the county, takes day trips for trout to Montebello and Graves Mountain Lodge, bass and crappie fishing at Lake Orange and other nearby lakes, shad fishing near Fredericksburg, and overnight Chesapeake Bay outings for stripers.

At each monthly meeting a mini lesson is followed by a guest speaker on topics of interest to Kingfishers. Frequently after such meetings some members join together for lunch and conversation. Members support Kids Day at Mint Springs Park the first Saturday in May and other teaching activities for children. The club maintains a locker we use to store fishing equipment for use by Senior Center members. In addition to equipment that can be borrowed, a library of books and folders on specific species of fish are maintained for the members’ use. The locker is in the Center’s basement and the key is available at the front desk.

Purchased nine years ago, this land has now been transformed into a beautiful “secret garden.” The owner has achieved privacy, provided a natural habitat for wildlife, and the yard changes from full sun to full shade with a variety of trees, shrubs, perennials, grasses and vines. This is a visit you won’t want to miss. Please come and join me as we enjoy this special time together.
