Second-Wind Band

Sunday, December 6th, 3:00-5:00 p.m. Senior Center, Inc.

Come have fun celebrating the joys of the season with our 60-member Second-Wind Band for an afternoon of shared musical delights and warm gingerbread feelings.

The varied program on Sunday, December 6, 3:00 p.m. will include: C.E. Duble's march of all marches, BRAVURA MARCH ~ Carl Orff's CARMINA BURANA ~ Del Borgo's A JEFFERSON PORTAIT, narrated by Thomas Jefferson himself (enacted by Rob Coles*) ~ a medley from FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, conducted by Fred Streckfuss the founder and first director of the Second-Wind Band ~ DESPERATION RAG, conducted by the composer himself, Paul T. Richards ~ NETTLETON (Come Thou Font Of Every Blessing) ~ JUST A CLOSER WALK WITH THEE (à la Canadian Brass) ~ Sergei Prokofiev's TROIKA (from Lieutenant Kijé Suite) ~ Robert Burns' AULD LANG SYNE (à la Mannheim Steamroller) ~ an old-fashioned audience sing-along of familiar Christmas tunes ~ and, in tribute to Pearl Harbor Day, THE MANSIONS OF THE LORD ~ plus, for good measure, the waltz of all waltzes (à la André Rieu), Shostakovitch's WALTZ NO. 2 (from Jazz Suite No. 2).

The band has 60+ members playing programs much like those of the typical municipal bands of the past 50 years--marches, musical comedy, ballads and so on. Some players had not played since high school, and some had never played before. We blend our increasing abilities to play for the community and have fun in the process. Our rehersals are on most Tuesdays form 10:45 to 12:45 p.m. Check the schedule on the link below. Visitors are welcome to attend our rehersals.

The Flashbacks Swing Band

This is a dance band of about twenty members that plays music from the ‘20s, ‘30s, and ‘40s, and even ‘50s and ‘60s. In addition to performing at community-wide events like First Night Virginia and the Virginia Festival of the Book, at area retirement residences, and for some dances at the Senior Center, the band is available for private events. Visitors are welcome at our rehearsals on Fridays from 10:45 a.m.-12:45 p.m.

We are associated with a national group, the New Horizons Bands. Senior bands were first started by Roy Ernst, a music educator from Rochester, New York. After ten years of existence, this enthusiastic group numbers over one hundred bands.
